Episode 118 - Steve "Eddie" Rice of Eddie and the Tide

Eddie and the Tide were a great Bay Area rock band of the early 80s that mixed heartland rock with some new wave flair, much like contemporaries Huey Lewis and the News and Greg Kihn. Over the course of the decade, they released five great albums (the second was produced by Eddie Money), but while their sound got sleeker and sleeker, no doubt for commercial purposes, that mass crossover never quite happened and the band called it quit as the decade was ending. These days, they may be best known for the song "Power Play" which was featured on the Lost Boys soundtrack, which turned 30 last week! Today Steve is a normal working man in Nashville, but he occasionally puts out excellent solo albums. One of my favorite discs of the last five years is his 2014 album The Eddie Rice Project, which is a soulful examination of an up and down life in hindsight. Enjoy!

One of my favorite memories is dancing to the band in Guerneville and Monterey, California. Still listen to them. Lifelong fan!

That is amazing. Huge honor! Not surprised though as he seems like the nicest guy ever.

Yes I am friends with the great Tom Neuerberg! Well that's cool that he would mention me to you! Tom is a music buff! Knows lots of stuff about music. He told me one of greatest days was when Steve Rice showed up to watch my band play a gig. I introduced Steve to Tommy he was so stoked! I was too, it was my first gig with my new band and as we're setting up the equipment I look up and there's Steve and his wife in the back of the club. He was in the Bay Area and his wife at the time talked him into coming out to my show. What a frickin' honor that he would show up for my show, especially since I was a fixture at all his shows. Chris Rieger was supposed to show up with another tide fan Joe Ryan (which Steves sing life's too short was written for after he passed away too soon) but Chris was feeling under the weather that night. But omg, what an honor to think 2 members of the band would've been there. But to have Steve there was most spectacular and I'll never forget that night because of his appearance!

Awesome interview! Steve is one of my best friends! Just hearing his voice makes me smile! He is a wonderful human being, and extremely talented. Fun listening to some of the stories! Actually some I've never heard of. Been to many of those concerts he mentioned in the podcast so it brought back some awesome memories. They are still well lived in the Bay Area and us Tide fans are always excited when Steve comes out with new material. Yes we would love to see a reunion and I don't think it'd be a couple hundred people it'd be a couple of thousand that show up! Lucky for me he's my friend, got sing on stage with band on a few occasions most memorable for me was Steves voice was out and motioned me up and got to sing the whole lead vocals "Looking for Excitement!" Now that was a rush! And got to sing with him at my wedding, which he performed a song he wrote at the ceremony. Alas.... if you haven't seen them live go to YouTube, I've posted many videos of their live performances that Steve gave me years ago. Go check it out! Nice interview!
